1993 Mercury Cougar XR-7 6 Cyl 3.80L

Preventive Maintenance

Is this worth the purchase

Hello, trying to get a decent car primarily for work that is a little more durable that my ford focus that recently folded ip like an accordion in an accident. The dealer is asking $2,750 and the vehicle only has 135k and looks in good cosmetic shape. What are some things to double check on? Timing belt, alternator, etc????

Brad, the late 80s-90s Ford and Mercury 3.8L V6 engine is notorious for cylinder head gasket failures.

Recommend for you to avoid this vehicle unless the dealership used car warranty includes complete coverage for engine failure.

The primary problems of the 3.8L engine design are due to galvanic reaction between the cylinder block, head gasket, and cylinder head to cause coolant leaks which also spoils the catalytic converter.

Typically the cylinder head gaskets will slowly lose coolant inside the engine and it will run hot.
