why won't my car start?

The motor turns over,I can hear the starter working it starts to flood its self when i crank it alot. I took the valve cover and distributer off to replace the seal put it back together it started right up,drove it for about 15 min parked it for about an hour and now it won't start. Sometimes it will try but wont completely start. Is it in the distributer its self or a ground wire problem? The coil is in the distibuter

Very likely the coil in the distributor, but, if you want to play safe mode, change the distributor with a reman. unit. That will ace it for sure. The coil, probability is greater than 50% but it's not a sure thing. You can confirm it if you want to go deeper into diagnostics but that will take up substantial time.

whats the diagnostics? Is the rotor in side the distributer suppose to touch the posts for the plug wires or just close enough to cause"fire". The end of the rotor seems a little burnt up but it is 20 years old as well prob just best bet to replace whole distributer huh?

The rotor just comes close but does not touch. Just trying to provide you with a reliable answer that has little or no diagnostics on your part provided you have supplied me with enough information to make a reasonable determination of cause. Change the distributor and be done with it.

i tested the spark plug wire by putting a screwdriver in it and laid it on the motor and had someone turn the car on it had a yellow spark but very weak. The spark plugs are new and the distributer cap is one and half years old there is oil in the distributor from where the seal was leaking. I appriciate all the help I just don't want to pay 200 dollars for a distibutor and it not fix the problem do you know if my car has a timing belt or chain?
