what does the rotor button look like?
is the distributor installed in the correct position? it is not difficult to install one 180 degrees out of time.

Sounds like you need to provide the rest of the story. Start from the beginning please. Did you replace parts already? Is the symptom the same as before you did the repairs?

all i've done was take it off, inspect, and replace, im still new to the whole thing, and it could be 180 degrees outta time like you had said, it only has one prong numbered from the bottom, being the 3 position, the truck was running before i inspected it, but it was running with a misfire and gettin terrible gas mileage, less than 10 mpg, it turns over now and cranks, but it doesnt want to run, i hear a pop and a nice little flash, im running outta ideas, whats a rotor button?

if you only took off the cap and did not remove the distributor itself then you don't have to worry about having it installed 180 out or "backwards."

a rotor sits under the cap and connects to the top of the distributor shaft. it spins around and "distributes" spark to the contacts in the cap as it moves. they can go bad. sometimes they break and flop around inside.

if the truck ran beforehand but backfires now, my guess is the wires aren't routed correctly in one way or another.
don't worry. you'll get it figured out.

you may need to take the thing out of the thing and spray brake solvent in there to clean out any unwanted food from the oven thing.

thats pretty good mike, i'mma get on top of that right meow, take the thing of the thing, and spray the food out the oven? there are more underlying issues i believe, ppl say it could be fuel line and injectors plugged up, possible, they said cylinder 2 has some issue, and whats under the cap seemed fine i think i'll go look again, im stressin its goin on day 3 in the garage

any vehicle from 1987 is going to have issues.
a chilton's manual may offer some useful information. check around the net for any factory manuals for your vehicle.
when it comes to fixing cars, information is one of your best friends.
the telltale sign for you is backfire, which, as far as i know, is a symptom of spark timing/distribution problems. a timing chain can also produce problems as the distribitor is run off of the camshaft and if the cam isn't in time then the spark won't be either.
do you have a timing light? that will tell you right away if your spark timing is where it should be.
hang in there.

got it, turns out the tighting clamp is on the back side and a little to the left, i found a 15 mm and couple short extensions work, very tight space, almost takes three hands to make it work
