Re: warming up car before driving in freezing winter conditions My question isn't specific to any particular make or model, but in general, to all vehicles made in the last 15 -20 years. Is it advisable to warm up a vehicle prior to driving it in freezing winter conditions? If a car isn't warmed up prior to driving in winter, would this add to the wear and tear or cause potential problems? |

Jimm 12/6/2018 It is never a good idea to warm-up a vehicle in cold weather on an extended idle period. Letting the engine idle for long periods in cold weather is harmful to the engine; first - the raw fuel of a cold start washes the film of oil inside the cylinders, increasing friction wear. Second, the engine components will last longer if they are gradually brought to operating temperature under load.
