2003 Buick Rendezvous CX 6 Cyl 3.40L

What would cause it to turn off while driving

I'm not sure what the sub model is, I just picked one to ask this question. This has happened twice, once when the engine was cold, I had only drove a few blocks, and once when it was hot, I had been driving for about 20 minutes at 60 mph. Everything shuts off..and I mean everything, but it all comes back on just as fast as it shut off, including the engine without doing anything, and keeps driving like nothing happened.

Several possibilities; faulty / loose battery cables, corroded battery terminal connections, faulty alternator wiring - to list only a few.

First question - have you lifted the hood and examined the battery and cable / terminals? If not start there - should be clean and tight with no corrosion.

Another possibility - GM built the 3100 and 3400 V-6 engines for 8 years (1995-2003) with well known intake and head gasket leakage issues. There are four (4) GM internal service bulletins -- from 2001 to 2004 -- warning and guiding General Motors dealers about the potential problem.

For example, in 2001, GM wrote:

"Some owners may comment on excessive engine coolant consumption, or an engine coolant leak near or under the throttle body area of the upper intake manifold." "Upper intake manifold composite material may degrade...and could result in an internal or external coolant leak."

GM's service bulletins list several vehicles potentially affected -- 23 makes and models manufactured between 1995 and 2003. Since then, GM has come out with a new, improved intake manifold gasket.
