Transmission Service needed on Nissan Sentra XE limited edition

In 2015 I bought this care despite feeling a thump when the transmission shifted from 1st to 2nd.
I don't drive the car much. I've averaged about 785 miles over the last 3.5 years.
A shade tree mechanic told me I just needed a transmission service. He quoted $140. A real mechanic has quoted me $120.
Because of the low mileage I put on it, I've been putting off the service.
The thump varies from hardly noticeable to very noticeable. I feel the thump at about 22 mph. If it's relevant, I found the car feels better if I let up on the gas just before the thump.
The only other possible symptom is the gear shift must be firmly seated in the DRIVE position when first starting the car to get it into gear. That gets easier after I've driven a bit. Today, holding it in position needed to be much firmer than usual.
I know I'm an idiot to have not already done the service. But what kind of damage am I facing here? Do need to rush right away? Or can I postpone this longer?

What exactly is the 'transmission service'? You can perform the fluid and filter change yourself for around $20.00-$30.00 for the filter kit and some fluid.

Try these on-line parts resources; www.autopartsanything.com; www.partsgeek.com; www.Rockauto.com, www.stockwiseauto.com - to list only a few.

In fact, they (RockAuto) list the replacement ilter kit from around $1.40 for your vehicle.

Transmission filter kit = FRAM part #FT1113 - or it's equivalent
