1997 Honda Accord LX 4 Cyl 2.20L

Body & Interior

Why does my temperature gauge fluctuate as I shift gears while gradually getting hotter without overheating?

The gauage rises as I drive but when I shift into nuetral it will lower and if I continue to idle it will continue to drop to normal levels.
I had to add a small amount of antifreeze and replaced a clamp to a hose on the radiator. This helped but it still flucates.
How do I check for a defective temperature gauage?
Should I be concerned about fan timings?

Thanks. Part seems cheap and easy to replace. What damage to my engine will be caused if I dont replace it, if any? It never rises above the 3/4 mark.

if you don't want to replace it that's up to you if it is faulty and it does over heat but you think its only at 3/4 mark you could do some damage to block or heads if it were me i spend the 20 dollars don't be cheap motors cost to much
