2002 BMW 530i Base 6 Cyl 3.00L

Steering & Suspension

Tech said rack & pinion boots torn and leaking. First is this common for 2002 530i with 100,000 miles.

Said needs to replace boots maybe even more work once boots are off. Any estimate on costs to do needed work and worst case costs? We live in North Texas.

I don't know if this is a common issue for Bmw but given the age and the ,mileage its possible.
Most likely by replacing the boots its gonna be only a temporary repair. The boot gets torn due to power steering fluid getting in contact with the boot. The boot its not oil resistant, its not designed to keep oil from leaking out from rack&pinion, prevents dirt and dust from entering the system.
So most likely u have a leaking rack&pinion, boot replacement its not gonna fix the issue.
