Light, sound and FM or AM radio signals are all waves of varying lengths, and they are all prone to interference. Water can interfere with a light wave, changing its speed we have all see a reflection in a street puddle, that is a light wave refracted. Sound waves can be interfered with by a heavy curtain or a wall. Car radios are also prone to interference from external sources. Tall buildings, mountains, electrical sources and the earth's atmosphere can all interfere with a radio wave's path to your car radio and the result is static. Static can be eliminated in a car radio. Avoid areas with a lot of electrical motors, like industrial or rail yards, when listening to AM radio. The electrical energy can create static. Electrical power lines can create static in AM radio as well. Extend your antenna fully. The length of the antenna is optimized for your car radio. Modern digital radios automatically tune themselves to the antenna. On older radios there was a tuning step that took place at installation. If you have replaced your antenna and have an older car, check your radio's documentation to make sure any antenna optimized tuning is not required. Remove bike racks and bikes from the car roof when you are not using them. The extra metal can interfere with the signal, creating static. Avoid using AM at night if you hear a lot of static or re-tune. The earth's atmosphere can reflect far-off signals in directions they were not meant to go. A far-off station broadcasting on a close frequency to the station you are listening can get reflected over thousand of miles. Avoid FM if you experience signal splitting. Signal splitting is the phenomenon where a reflected signal and the main signal hit you antenna at the same time. It is especially prevalent in cities with tall buildings. Vary your route. Static, or signal splitting in the same place, is environmental, and a detour can eliminate it.

Check the antenna connection to the radio unit - may have become loose or disconnected.
