1999 Ford Explorer XLT 6 Cyl 4.0L

Steering & Suspension

The steering is getting hard sometimes when turning

It seems that the power steering isn't working when I make a turn slowly .
When I give it some gas it helps and it starts working again

Check the lower steering shaft u-joint for being frozen. If one side of the u-joint is frozen the steering will resist turning for approximately half the turning of the wheel - example, loose - tight - loose - tight - loose, this happens as the frozen joint is forced to pivot causing tightness at the steering wheel. At least rule it out. This could also be a bad pump too.
