1987 Chevrolet El Camino Base 6 Cyl 4.3L

sometimes the starter will not crank

when it does not want to crank I found that if i turn the steering column below the steering wheel and that moves the needle over closer to the "P" for park then it will crank. It is an automatic floor shifter. I noticed when I turn the column it moves some linkage that goes underneath the car. I assume its connected on the transmission some where.

Ah yes had an old monte carlo i used to have to do the same thing with! You can adjust the shift linkages to try and get it right. Sometimes its just the column it gets old and loose. I wound up getting a better column at a salvage yard and rebuilding that one because my column was too worn.
