Speedo and tranny problems

2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT 4WD, sometimes when I hit a bump the speedometer will drop to 0 and tranny will stay in 1st, will not shift. Another bump will sometimes make everything work correctly, sometimes not. Speedometer also drops when braking. Any ideas?

First step - check the battery terminal connections (clean and tight, no corrosion), and the ground (negative) cable connection at the end opposite the battery. Same consideration - should be clean and tight with no corrosion.
Next, check the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) connection and wiring at the output shaft of the transmission. Sounds like either a faulty VSS, or poor / corroded / loose connection.

Try these online resources; www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.rockauto.com, www.partsgeek.com - to list only a few.

In fact, they (RockAuto) list the replacement vehicle speed sensor (VSS) from around $8.30 each for your vehicle.

Vehicle speed sensor = STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS part #SC90 - or it's equivalent
