I want to regain most of the original ride of the vehicle which has 75k miles. would KYB replacements be a good choice?
    Which strut/shock assemblies?

If you want to regain the original ride, install genuine Toyota parts, not KYB. Also, don't just change struts just because they have 75K on them. Most struts that are replaced don't actually need replacement. Want the best ride, install 4 Michelin tires and have a wheel alignment done.

Hear screeching sound when I drive over bumps on my side: had an accident on that side. What can I do?
My mechanic says he replaced the shocks & a special bolt and aligned wheels. Since it makes this noise. It doesn't happen when the car is stopped. Diagnostic lights are not on. What can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance

Use the 'Diagnose' feature on the AutoMD website to help describe the problem you are having in detail; when does the noise occur? At what speeds? Is the sound localized - from the front or rear, left or right sides?
Try to describe the problem in detail and post a reply for further assistance. You may also reference the 'How-To-Guides' feature for steps to inspect and diagnose the suspension and steering sytems - along with videos and photos.

Steering wheel freezes while on highway, going about 55 and cannot steer car. this has happened twice so cannot drive ca
the vsc light blinks , the engine control malfunction light is on, and the battery charging system light is on also. we checked the altenator and it is working well, and the battery holds a full charge.

The alternator has to be checked AT THE TIME THE LIGHTS GO ON because the alternator failure may be intermittent. When the voltage level drops from a normal 14.5 approx down to 11.5 or 12 volts the vehicle ECU sees this and turns on warning lights. Your Highlander has electric power steering and it is disabled if it receives low voltage. My feeling is that you may have a bad alternator but you have to have some sharp mechanic be able to confirm this DURING the failure, otherwise you will be replacing the alternator on a probable hunch, which is sometimes all you have to go on. You should check for any stored fault codes but even doing that will require that you have a shop grade scan tool to read the power steering module fault codes.

The proper way is to jack-up the front end and check for loose steering and suspension cmponents.
For example tie-rod ends, ball joints, etc.

Use the 'How-To-Guides' feature on the AutoMD website for more specific steps to inspect and diagnose the front end and steering components.

Check the many on-line auto parts sources, such as;,, and - to list only a few sources. For example, they (Rock Auto) list the; steering gearbox (remanufactured) from around $239.00 (minus core charge), the tie rod end (inner or outer)from around $4.50 (each), and the steering damper (if equipped) from around $21.00 for your vehicle.

Creakiing sound when steering wheel is turned
the vehicle has approximately 230,000 miles and makes no other noises when driving, just the creaking noise when the steering wheel is turned. It occurs at speed as well as standing,

First step - check the steering fluid and refill the power steering fluid level as required. Next step - with an assistant, raise the hood and with the engine on and the transmission in Park or Neutral - slowly rotate the steering wheel left and right directions to determine the source of the noise.
Beyond the power steering fluid level, there are several possibilities; faulty / worn drive belt, faulty / worn belt tensioner, faulty / worn suspension bushing - though the issue is more than likely related to the steering system.

Power steering not working good ,need replace the pump, and transmission line
the shop ask 6 hours work on the power steering and cost me $1,200.00 to fix it was that reasonable .

Check the many on-line auto parts sources, such as;,, and - to list only a few sources. For example, they (Rock Auto) list the power steering pump (without reservoir) from around $68.00 for your vehicle.

Not sure about the transmission line - was this the rigid line; on the pressure or the return side?

Anyway, the only way to judge 'reasonable' would be to have comparable cost estimates from different repair shops for the same work performed.

Seems excessive to me by a lot. Posted all data labor for the ps pump is 1.5 hours. The tranny line I need more detail about. 1200 is a lot of money for these two items but I need to see the bill and then have more questions after.

I don't know what they're reffering to costing that much, but chances are the problem is in the
      steering rack.

When i turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, i hear a scraping sound. Also, when i am backing out of the
driveway and go over a hump, there is a scraping sound. I recently had the tires rotated and it started soon after that. The steering wheel occasionally vibrates.
    • frankiedonnn

Hi pmor240, Something may have been disturbed during the rotation : Look and see if some thing is loose and hanging in the wheel area. It seems as if the wheel is touching some thing when it goes over the bump Check the steering fluid too to see if it is low in case it is pump noise. The vibration could be caused if the wheel rims need balancing. When the wheels are rotated the rims should be checked for balance at the same time because the rims on the rear are now on the front .And tyre pressure is important.

dude its normal. I know it sounds screwy but its just a design flaw that they haven't addressed it but; what are you gonna do? I have owned around 20 toyotas in the last 20 years and they ALL do it eventually. I asked a friend of mine who's a master mechanic for toyota and he says it doesn't hurt anything. It's just annoying, No harm tho. Sorry

I have a rubbing or grinding noise in my right front wheel when making a right turn. Is that a sign of a wheel bearing
and what is worst possible thing that coulld happen?
    • wbrockstar
      8/27/2013 wbrockstar
Normally if its the bearing,it will get louder when your making a left hand turn at a sufficient speed because all of the cars weight shifts to right side of car which puts extra strain on that side.It could still be the bearing though. You can jack the front end of car off ground and spin the tire by hand listening for the noise but the wheel is gonna be a lil harder to spin than normal because its front wheel drive. It could also be the cv axle assembly. If you turn wheel all the way in one direction and backup slowly,,if you hear popping, clunking,or grindin then its the cv axle

Vehicle starts making the anti skid noise and then starts to gear down. The VSC lights both on and off come on.
Also starts to gear down like 4 wheel drive. This has happen going 25 mph and 76mph. Does not matter the weather. Was only once in a while, now every day. A while back I had it in a Toyota dealership for 4 days. They found nothing. 2001 has only 72000 miles.

Notification light "VSC TRAC" & "TRAC OFF" is on but shop said nothing is wrong.
When reset goes off and then comes back on approximately half a mile down the road
    • Jimm
      7/13/2013 Jimm
VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and TRAC lights will come on any time the check engine light does to reduce engine load. As such these lights being on may have nothing to do with the why the check engine light came on.
If the check engine light is on, a trouble code(s) has been stored in the computer that points to the problem area. You may have the fault code scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA, etc.

The engine may have a stored fault code, if it is not working the engine will revert back to a fail safe condition so that no damage will occur. But it will not be running at peak performance. Or it could be something to trigger the engine diagnostic system.

Could be something as simple as the fuel / gas cap not tightened all the way - needs a few more clicks or half turn. You may also reset the system by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 30 seconds or more - then reattach - to see if the warning lights stay out.
