normally when this happens it is down to the switch ( reversing) fitted to gearbox. not a huge job but much easier for a garage to fix unless you can get under easily ( and safely) and have enough DIY mechanics skills for the job.

Stephen Hawthorne - 2006 Saturn Ion-3 - Body & Interior - 10/6/2011 recently noticed a thumping noise coming from behind the heater/AC control area. It stops when recirc. button is on
41,000 miles. Occurs intermittently, more often than not. Depressing the air recirculation button stops the thumping. When the air recirculation button is off the thumping returns, sometimes immediately, somtimes a short time later. No check engine light or other ...

There is a vacuum controlled flap for switching from outside to recirculate. If the vacuum motor or the hose fails, it will thump or make noise.

Upon reading the question my first impression was a faulty relay (Stuck) but now that you have included the stalk in the mix (Signal Lights) it has led me to believe that the combination switch needs replacing. Of course to be safe, swap out the headlight relay with another one and check if the problem persists.

How do I access the license plate light on a 2000 How do you replace the license plate bulbs on a 2000 Saturn LS2?
How do you get access to these bulbs to replace them?

You should inspect the area around the bulb, if there is a clear panel or trim panel around or blocking access to the bulb, try to pop it free. But some paneling may be held in with plastic clips while other parts may be secured with bolts or screws. Use a socket wrench or a screwdriver to remove parts until you can access the bulb.

I appreciate the reply. I found the answer to my question in the owner's manual. (Who would have guessed?) The bulb, and socket are accessed from the inside of the trunk lid.

I had a problem with my driver side rear passenger door not opening when I bought a used Saturn. After reading the manual, I found that it was a child safety feature and I needed to open the door and use a screwdriver to turn the safety feature to unlock it. Look in your manual and see if your car is equipped with such child safety features.

An intermittant thumping has developed under the dash.

What should I do if my DCL is not working and won't give a reading on what's wrong with my car?
I just bought the car and the windows will not go down. I don't know if it's a fuse or somethingelse. Has anyone ever had problems with their windows on a Saturn? Could it be the tracks? How expensive would it be to get the windows fixed? Thanks, G. Clark

In the instrument panel junction box check the BODY fuse (10 amp). If the fuse is open the code reader will not power up.

I will assume that none of the power windows work?

I believe you mean DLC. Are you inquring about the location of the connector? Or location/identification of the fuse that powers it? The connector is on the bottom edge of the dash, below about where your left knee is as you're driving. The fuse is one of the interior fuses (pull of the cover by the passenger side footwell). IIRC, it's the same fuse that powers the lighter. BODY or CHIME fuse, maybe? There's a rough guide on the inside of the cover, and a more complete guide in the owner's manual.

Is there anything else not working? Lighter, interior light, chime, radio?

    • Nissan Technical Advisor
Could be the horn is defective already. Remove the horn and connect the wires to neg & positive terminals of the battery, if the horn works, problem is an open wiring or the clock spring in the steering wheel that probably snaps out of place.
