      Safety Tip: Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

      Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.

      Position the jack under the front of the Kia Sportage and jack it up from the cross frame under the engine. Once the vehicle is high enough, place a safety stand under the frame on both sides of the Sportage. Slowly lower the Sportage to the top of the safety stands and leave the jack in the up position.

      Slide under the driver side of the Kia Sportage near the driver-side door and locate the transmission drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. The drain plug requires a 24 mm socket to remove and tighten it.

      Position the drip pan under the area of the of the drain plug. Loosen and remove the drain plug with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and the 24 mm socket. Once all of the transmission fluid has drained into the drip pan, screw the drain plug back in and tighten down tight with the ratchet and socket.

      Pull the drip pan out from under the Kia Sportage. Open the hood and remove the transmission dipstick from the dipstick tube. The transmission dipstick has the words "transmission" or "ATF" on the handle of the dipstick.

      Slide the long neck funnel into the dipstick tube. Pour 3 qts. of the SP-3 automatic transmission fluid into the dipstick tube. Remove the funnel and slide the dipstick into the tube.

      Crank the Kia Sportage and hold the brake pedal down. Shift the gear selector lever through all of the gears two or three times. Then, put the lever back into park. Let the engine run for about two minutes before checking the fluid level on the dipstick.

      Pull the dipstick out with the engine still running. Check the fluid level on the dipstick. Three quarts of the transmission fluid should put the fluid level on the full mark on the dipstick. Slide the dipstick back into the tube and close the hood.

      Turn the engine off. Jack the front of the Kia Sportage back up and remove the safety stands. Lower the Sprtage to the ground and remove the jack.

      Note: KIA recommends using the SP-3 automatic transmission fluid inside of the transmission but there are also other replacement fluids for the SP-3. Ask any technician at any auto-parts store for the correct replacement fluid for the SP-3 automatic transmission fluid. Use extreme caution when working under any vehicle that is jacked up and on jack stands.

    Wheel bearing maybe?
    I feel a clunk in the right rear wheel when I back up and the same wheel locks up temporarily when I go forward.

      could be a bearing but i would suspect a brake problem if it locks up temporarily and not drive it till it's fixed

      Yes it is possible that the fault is your wheel bearing it might be out of adjustment or defective. Also check the condition of your brake pads/shoes (it might be contaminated or loose from their mounting) and brake caliper (to be thorough also check the condition of your wheel cylinder).

      should have a wheel bearing cap in the center or the rear drum. remove cap. behind that is a nut with a cotter pin thru it. remove the pin then unscrew the nut. drum should slide off over shoes if the e brake is off and if your brakes are not the culprit

    4th gear at 3,000 rpm's accelerating rpm's adjust upward but mph stays the same. Is clutch going out?

      Try to diagnose your vehicle first with a scan tool to check if all your electrical controls and sensors are still functioning well before you check you clutch.

      Seems like the shifter itself has the problem and lots of times I have taken pennies out of that area.

      Internal transmission damaged is more likely the cause, its sad but overhauling or replacement is the best solution.

    Replace the throttle postion sensor , Will not down shift . Going up a hill no power

      Diagnose the engine with a scan tool. One of my suspicions is bad catalytic converter. Verify this and retrieve the codes and then post it here so that the community can translate them and give suggestions.

      Something mechanical is causing it to freeze up. I would disconnect the cable from the selector lever on the transmission and see that the lever moves freely. if it does then you know the cable is the cause.

      Well first thing is to check the bulbs and make sure it is not the bulbs first. if the bulbs are fine and there is no power getting to the bulb sockets then check the fuse for that circuit. next if the fuse checks out okay is to check the switch for the reverse lights now the switch is either part of the shifter or is part of the neutral safety switch depending on the vehicle and I am not sure on the sportage but most vehicles it is the neutral safety switch that contains the switching mechanism for the reverse lghts.

      Could be the pinion bearing is worn or damaged. Check the condition of differential fluid if low (if equipped). Add fluid or change it if found contaminated. The differential should be check if the gears are worn or damage and then overhaul if necessary.

      You could have an internal damage and the possible causes of this are; Intermediate band adjustment incorrect. Intermediate band seal or piston damaged. Intermediate band friction element or lever rod damaged. Direct clutch drum damaged, outer diameter out of specification. Main control assembly gaskets damaged or bolt out of torque. Main control separator plate damaged. Main control solenoid stuck or damaged. Bring the car to a shop to correct the problem before it get worst. You can use the "Find a Shop" feature of AutoMD for nearby shops in your area.

    Sometime it hard to shift in first or second gear. Its a 5 speed
    Its happens mostly when the vehicle is stopped

      When is the last time that you’ve replace your clutch components? It is possible that some of its components are worn/damage/week/broken. Also check the condition of your shifting linkage.

    My car won't start and i don't what is causing this?
    in order to turn my car on i have to get a jump. and if i drive it i can't turn it off because then it wil not start. so is it the battery?

      It is possible. Did you already check the condition of your battery (voltage, amperage, state of charge) and its terminals/cables? How old is your battery? Battery’s life is only 3yrs – 5 yrs only and its performance will deteriorate.
