Car acts as if it's in neutral in all gears except park?
When I shift the car out of park and give it gas (any gear), it does not move. It started while stopped in traffic, and when I gave it gas, it started smoking and would not shift out of first gear. Trans WAS NOT slipping before this problem arose.

What do I need to fix?
My OBD Code Reader says there is a P0740 error, or TCC Circuit Malfunction. Torque Converter was just replaced and seems to be running properly.

Why doesnt transaxle shift into 3rd gear while drving normally when shift selector is in 3rd or overdrive
when driving while shifter is in 3rd or overdrive, vehicle will reach apox 38 to 40 mph then then it will slip and bang back into 2nd gear.

You may have an internal problem within the transmission or perhaps a bad torque converter. I'm not an expert on automatic transmission but I can tell you that many auto transmission problems can be solved by changing the fluid. Since it's pretty cheap to do so I'd start there and if it doesn't solve your problem than bring it to a garage because you probably aren't going to be able to fix it without taking the whole darn thing apart. Good Luck!

Where is the reset button for the transmision

Huh? reset Button?? what are you trying to do? and who mentioned a reset button?
    • bart
      9/15/2010 bart
Its not called a reset, but there is a button. On the right side of the console towards the rear you will find a finger hole. If your sitting in the drivers seat, put your right hand index finger into hole far enough to depress a lever you will feel. At the same time with your left hand you will be able to take car out of park. No B. S.

Well your right Bart but Thats not a reset button that would be the shift lock release in the event your vehicle is stuck in park due to the brake switch not functioning properly, and not allowing the shift to release

Same engine, same number of gears? Perfect fit

You own the second generation by the way from 94-2001 for a 1500

Transmissions for the Ram were the lower geared A500/42RH-RE for light duty applications found behind the 3.9 L V6, the A518/46RH-RE for more heavy duty applications found behind the 5.2 L and 5.9 L V8 engines, and the A618/47RH-RE for heavy duty use behind the V10 gasoline and Cummins diesel engines. The 47RH was used in 1994 and 1995 model years, while the 47RE was used from 1996 through 2002. A NV3500 was offered in 1500 Rams and light duty 2500 Rams. A NV4500 was standard in 2500 and 3500 trucks (except the uncommon, light duty 2500 rams). A NV5600 was offered in 2000 Rams and was the only transmission offered behind the High Output diesel in 2001 and 2002.

block front wheels...jack up truck...spin wheels...determine where noise is coming from...axle tube bearings...pinion bearing...if in doubt...pull off differential cover and inspect for broken parts and metal debris..

my 2002 dodge ram 1500 was making same noise. pinion bearing was bad. I replaced all my bearings and seals. The actual pinion and ring gear was in very good shape. My truck runs like new with the news bearings, I can tell the difference right away.
