You have to remove the belt and look for the component that is seizing up and causing the belt to break. There is no big mystery here. This belt turns several things. Power steering pump, water pump, alternator, belt tensioner, ac compressor ** . Notice the two asterisks on ac compressor? That would be my #1 suspicion. It is not the fault of the belt. Something is no good. Find which something.

      NY Giants FTW!!!!!!!!!!

We have the same experience, in my case it happens when i spray cologne to myself inside the car before i go to work. So i usually do it outside my car, whenever i do that there is no vinegar scent.

Now with your case. Foul odors from an auto A/C system is actually a very common problem. It's also quite simple to solve, if you know how to get to the source of the problem. Countless 'fixes' promise to remove the odor, but only mask them.

Understand first of all, that any product you spray into your dash vents or apply from inside the car will only mask the odors. They will not solve the problem, that's for sure.

The problem starts at your auto A/C evaporator. More specifically, it starts on what is known as the 'air side' of the evaporator. That is the side that faces the incoming air. What you may not know is that all of the air that enters into your vehicle MUST pass over the evaporator first. Regardless if you're calling for cooling or heating, all of the air entering your vehicle passes over the evaporator first.

The typical auto A/C system (or MHVAC... mobile heating, ventilation and air conditioning system) is actually a 'series re-heat' system. That means all the air entering your vehicle passes over the evaporator first. If you're calling for cooling or A/C, the air enters directly into your vehicle passenger compartment after passing over the evaporator. If you're calling for heat, then the air is directed from the evaporator to the heater. Then it enters your car as heated air. In the event you are calling for something between full heat of full cooling, then some of the air is directed right into the car while some of it is directed over the heater. The air mix provides the comfort level that you select. The only way to resolve the problem of odors from your auto A/C system is to get directly to the root of the problem. Evaporator treatments available on the market can do just that. The reason we say 'can', is that a lot of products sold as an odor treatment are still applied through the vents. By know you understand that anything applied through the vents will not solve the problem. Therefore, getting an odor treatment that's applied directly on the face of the evaporator will help eliminate the problem.

The A/C Evaporator Treatment does just that. It's a complete single can application kit that includes a 30" spray wand that let's you get directly to the air side of the evaporator - exactly where the problem starts. This product is easy to install. Simply locate the evaporator case from under the hood. The evaporator is usually on the passenger side of the vehicle. The spray wan has to be inserted (through any opening) between the evaporator and the blower motor. That assures you are applying the product to the air side of the evaporator. If an opening is not available, you can loosen the blower motor housing and route the application hose into the evaporator case that way. The spray wand is only 3/16" of an inch thick, so just about any opening will do.

In alternative cases, where no opening is available, you can CAREFULLY DRILL A 1/4" HOLE into the evaporator case. CAUTION must be used as drilling into the evaporator will cause a leak that is probably not repairable. With a small 1/4" hole in the air side of the evaporator, you can easily thread the application hose into the evaporator case. Once completed, simply use a 'puddy' to cap the hole.

From our experience, one application will usually last between 3-6 months, depending on how contaminated the A/C evaporator is. Your particular results may vary.

I have a (1996 Cadillac Deville 4.6 V8, Ineed to recharge the (AC), Can anyone tell me where the low side port is?

You should check the low pressure charging port on the refrigerant line on your car. The low pressure port will be on the larger tube, usually near or on the accumulator.

The horn only works when it feels like it. We checked all the fuses and relays which appear fine.
The security alarm on the vehicle won't operate without a working horn because they are set to work together which the book states.

Why is my car lossing antifrezze, its no leak?
in the past two weeks the coolant was low, i had to put some coolant in twice

Most cars will loss a little over time from evapaoration . Something like a qt or two in a year . Thats norm . If your going through alot every week with no leaks then look for white smoke out the tail pipe . That shows maybe a blown head gasket or sometimes a cracked head . So your motor is burning coolant .
      2/27/2012 amy
okay thank you and no i don't see any smoke from the tail pipe..

It can be anywhere from $300 to $400 depending on the shop and location. Try locating a shop under "Find a Shop", or use the "Negotiator".

Thanks much for taking time to help. I am new to this. Will try both suggestions.

In most cases when it comes to a Cadillac (new or old ) the dealer knows most . There is a down fall . And just food for thought . I live in Montana and own a car carrier and haul brand new Chevys to every dealer in MT , ID , and WY . A hand full are great at taking care of you and your car . More act like if you didn't buy it from them they don't want anything to do with you . Ther are 3 Chevy / GM dealers within 30 miles of my house and only one that stands behind EVERYTHING . Shop around there are good dealers out there that still care .
      2/20/2012 ruth
My dealer treats me like I have to accept whatever they dish out. Sometimes okay, sometimes not so. I did buy the car there (used). It is no longer under any warranty, so am looking for one of the good guys who will be fair and honest. I intend to keep this car as long as I can, so want it to be in good shape. I'd rather do preventive maintenance than have problems.
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment. I will see what happens with "Negotiator" and "Find a Shop."

When replacing the Air Cleaner, Souldn't you also clean the MAS sensor?.
If so what should you use? Carb cleaner has slight oil in it which would draw dust, brake cleaner is pure, BUT is it TOO STRONG to do damage to sensor?
    • Bill
      2/7/2012 Bill
Brake cleaner is weaker than carb cleaner. They actually sell MAF sensor spray cleaner.
      2/9/2012 Arnie
Thanks Bill........ I will look for some MAF cleaner..........

Why do day run lights work only when car is in gear. Why do only highbeams work when light switch is used.
Can the DRL sensor in the dash go bad and can it be a DIY job?
    • Arnie
      2/7/2012 Arnie
When you put the car in park your run light go out so you don't run your batt down when idleing and you are not running. (No need for lights). You can switch on low beam by pushing stick down instead of pulling it up
