Mileage- 57600; We have only owned the car a year. No former problems we are aware of. When the car goes into a gear change after taking off, it sometimes hesitates in the middle of the change a few to several seconds before the change goes through. It is not ...

First question - have you checked the transmission fluid level, and refilled as necessary?

The slipping shifts is a common problem on this model transmission. It is due to a failure of the forward sprag clutch. This clutch is fully mechanical and the transmission does have to come apart to replace the forward sprag clutch, but typically a full rebuild is not necessary. You can drive the vehicle with the transmission shifter in the Low 1 range then shift up manually to avoid the slip condition, as there is an additional hydraulic clutch applied over the forward sprag clutch when in the Low 1 range.

There are other possibilities; pressure control solenoid failure - may cause erratic shifting.

Could be a clogged and restricted catalytic converter. lack of fuel pressure, faulty MAF sensor. you didnt mention if the check engine light was on or flashing. whether or not the transmission was actually shifting. theres a lot of veritables, start with the basics and go from there. process of elimination. hopes this hopes. good luck.

Shutter and shake as you accelerate, seems like a ignition misfire under load condition, the ignition coil can be faulty or the sparkplug wire,

If the fluid level is OK; still slips / does not engage - then no easy fix. Most likely the transmission bands / friction surfaces are worn and need replacement. This means either a transmission overhaul / rebuild or replacement. The black / discolored fluid you mentioned is not a positive sign.

Check the various on-line vendors; www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.RockAuto.com, www.partsgeek.com, to list only a few. For example, they (RockAuto) list the transmission (rebuilt) from around $1130.00 (minus core exchange and minus labor), and the transmission rebuild kit from around $130.00 for your vehicle.
