2002 Chrysler Neon Base 4 Cyl 2.0L

Rough Idle and knocking sound when cold

I have a 2002 Chrysler neon LE, the car idles rough and when stopped it feels like its going to stall. It has a knocking sound when i first start it after over night being parked but goes away when it warms. I think it might be my EGR valve but i have been told that this particular model does not have an EGR valve. It also has the check engine light on. Little while back i got it checked and the mechanic told me it was the EGR valve, so now i don't know what to do. What would be the best solution to fixing this myself?

First of all try changing to a better grade oil. Could be oil pump intake screen dirty on cold starts not distributing oil to internal engine parts good or fast enough. If you do it yourself try a 10-40 synthetic for maximum lubrication efficiency. If this doesn't help at least you will know proper lubrication not the problem. Order on line a new oxygen sensor. This may solve Service engine light problem. Once this is done then you have taken serious steps to solving or solve problem. Also get a good fuel injector cleaner to add to gas tank. You may even have moisture in fuel. Ask parts store for these items. There inexpensive if you do it yourself.
