2002 Volkswagen Jetta GL 4 Cyl 2.00L

Preventive Maintenance

Road trip in 2002 VW?

I have a 2002 VW Jetta with 94,000 miles on it, and I'm planning to go on a long cross-country road trip this summer. Based on past road road trips (with the same car), I estimate that I'll be driving 5,000-7,000 miles in all. But I'm worried about whether my car can handle the trip at its age. I've recently had the car serviced and examined at a dealership (they replaced the spark-plugs and ignition coil), and it doesn't have any specific problems of which I am aware. But in general I haven't been rigorous in servicing the car over the years (I haven't always changed the oil and had the car checked every 3,000 miles, for example) and I wonder whether it is still safe for long-distance driving at 94,000 miles. If it was your car, would you be willing to take a 2002 VW at 94,000 miles on a cross-country road trip? Or would you recommend cancelling the trip?

It all depends on the vehicle condition; have the car thoroughly inspected by a trusted technician, or do it yourself - using the 'How-To-Guides' on the AutoMD website. The actual mileage is immaterial.

Have the following items inspected; tires, brakes, suspension, steering, alignment, cooling system - plus the typical fluids and engine / filters condition.
