Preventive Maintenance

Can you tell me what could possibly be wrong with my car?

My car had been acting like it didn't want to start. So I had to hold the positive cable down to start it. I tightened the cable. Then it wouldn't start without a jump. I get the jump and when I put the car in drive the car completely dies.It has 224,500 miles on it. It was having problems accelerating and not shifting gears prior to it completely dying can you tell me what the problem could possibly be?

Since the positive cable needed to be held to start the car, I'd start there - pull off (disconnect) both the battery connections to inspect for looseness or damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
