It sounds like you might have what I had wrong. My fuel injectors needed cleaning so I took them out and had Las Vegas Injector Kings clean them. The car ran fine after that.

I would check the O2 and MAF sensor first.

The MAF would affect both banks so that is unlikely. Also, if the car has any miles on it at all, there is a really good chance that the fuel injectors are dirty or failing. They would need to be cleaned or checked out anyway even if the O2 sensor is bad. Might as well do the injectors as they need to be done anyway.

If you check all possible causes of a P0172 code for a Neon, you'll find the O2 sensor and MAP are part of that list.

How many banks are there on a 4 cylinder? Here are other causes: EVAP purge solenoid, ECT sensor operation, fuel filter/pressure regulator, PCM.

Oh yea, I'm thinking 6 cyl for some reason. Some of those possible causes would likely trigger other codes though too I think? FWIW, O2 sensors and dirty injectors are the #1 and #2 causes of emissions test failures from what I understand. I take it to mean then these are the most likely items to go bad/need servicing.
