oil in radiator? and what is a transmission oil cooler?

the plastic top on my radiator cracked today, and when we removed it, what appeared to be either oil or transmission fluid was mixed in (I said tranny fluid, experienced helper said oil).
when I looked up parts I came across the "transmission oil cooler" which is just in front of the radiator. I'm not very experienced but I have done minor repairs for years but never heard of transmission oil or its cooler. So 3 questions....Is transmission oil the same as fluid? and could it mix with the coolant? Or do I have a bigger problem?

Yes, the transmission fluid can mix with the coolant (anti-freeze) if the transmission oil cooler has developed a crack or a leak.

Generally, the transmission oil cooler is a separate tank built into the radiator, but on some vehicles it may be be a separate component - like a small heater core.

Try these various on-line parts vendors; www.autopartsanything.com, wwwpartsgeek.com, www.rockauto.com - to list only a few.

In fact, PartsGeek lists the transmission oil cooler from around $40.00 for your vehicle.
