Manual transmission will not go into gear

The vehicle will not go into gear while running, but goes easily into gear when not running. If I put it into 1st gear while the engine is off, then turned on, I can not get it out of gear while the engine is running. Must turn off the engine to get out of gear. There seems to be no slipping. I had noticed a bit of a burning smell like burning oil once the problems started. The burning smell is inconsistent, meaning i didnt smell it the whole time i was driving. Basically only smelled it when driving required frequent shifts.Fluid for the clutch master cylinder appears to be full so no leaks there. It started last week. The vehicle was stiff when shifting gears. The next day I had to use a good amount of effort to force it into gear. The next day required force again on the way to work. When leaving work that day I could not get it into reverse and all other gears were very difficult. I stopped at a stoplight near home and could not get it back into any gear. Had to have it towed home.
