Very Loose Steering Problem

I just bought this car, do not know anything about it yet or any BMW. So far I love the car but have many questions; I'll start with this one as it's my biggest concern.
The steering is extremely loose with lots of lag; meaning when I go to turn the steering wheel must be moved about 8 inches before the front wheels start to turn. Sitting still it’s very difficult to turn. I really want to fix this ASAP; any insight would be greatly appreciated. I've owned the car for only a few days now. Previous owner (private person buying and selling cars on eBay) said it has a leak in the power steering reservoir. I found receipts from a shop that replace a power steering hose and flushed the system.
What should I do to fix this?

Try the 'How-To-Guides' feature on the AutoMD website for the specific steps to inspect the front end components for excess wear / play / looseness.
If the steering wheel has excess play as you have described, then look for the steering rack and pinion, or the steering gear iteself - to be replaced or serviced.
Also, look for the following possibilities; worn / loose wheel bearing or bearing hub, worn / faulty suspension bushing, worn / faulty steering bushing or component - such as the anti-sway arm bushings or end links.

Try the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; www.RockAuto.com or www.autopartswarehouse.com for the replacement parts. For example, they (Rock Auto) list the steering gear for around $306.00 (minus core exchange) for your vehicle.
