This sounds like high line pressure in the transmission. This is controlled by a line pressure solenoid that may be stuck. Usually this will result in a stored fault code of P0745 in the transmission module. There was a TSB of NTB05-001 on this problem put out in In January, 2005. Have a transmission shop or the Nissan dealer check for this code and do the repair according to the TSB.

The other scenario is that as transmission seals get old and shrink or tear, they start to lose pressure, and the line pressure solenoid tries to compensate by boosting pressure to prevent slippage. This also causes harsh shifts. If this has been happening gradually, then you're probably due for a transmission rebuild. If it came on suddenly, then its probably just the solenoid. Good Luck!
