2004 Volkswagen Jetta GL 4 Cyl 1.80L

Preventive Maintenance

Why isn't my car starting at all?

I recently bought a VW Jetta and hadn't messed with it for a month. Well time came to move it and I had to jump it off, which worked fine. A week or 2 later though I tried to start it and it didn't crank over or start at all, not even the dash lights came on. When I tried to jump it, it didn't crank or start, but every single light that could come on in the interior did, including the radio. I think the headlights flashed a little too. We tried maybe 3 more times and got the same result. I think it may be the starter and the battery but I couldn't be sure. Anybody got any ideas?

Is there a reason why you failed to test the cars battery
as well as charge the battery & retest it ?

It doesn't matter if the starter is good or failed.

If your vehicles electronics are dead from a discharged
battery,it won't get a signal to engage the starter.

When you buy a used vehicle you work on it for a few weeks,
testing things & changing all fluids,filters,spark plugs,etc,before
putting it into service.

You let it sit unused for a month not knowing anything about your
battery & not charging it,then most likely it will be dead

Jumping a battery or driving the car, is not charging the battery
in order to put into service & then do some testing to learn about
the cars systems.
