2005 Jeep Liberty Limited 6 Cyl 3.70L

Transmissions & Drivetrains

I'm having problems with the transmission. It shifts really hard into 4th gear. Is there anything I can do to prolong

The transmission has 200,000 miles on it and I know it's wore out and needs to be replaced. It hesitates in first gear and shifts really hard into 4th gear. When the vehicle is cold it shift smoothly. But I was wondering if there's anything I can do to prolong the life of it? Like maybe replacing a solenoid? We just don't have the money at the moment to buy a remanufactured transmission. The vehicle is used by my wife to deliver mail so it's our livelihood.

Not really - any work performed or parts replaced now would be a waste of money, and duplicated when the replacement transmission is installed.

Have you considered a used transmission? These are much less expensive than a remanufactured or rebuilt unit. A quick internet search shows the used automatice transmission for less than $400.00 for your vehicle. Of course, this cost does not include the labor for the installation.

Here are some possible sources; www.buyusedengine.com; www.partshotlines.com; www.salvageauto.com; www.goproengines.com; www.theautochannel.com - to list only a few.

Okay that's kind of what I figured but thank you very much. I'm going to buy a used transmission from a local junkyard. Do you know if I have to get a transmission from the same year or can it be around the same year?

Before you purchase, check the identification tag on the existing transmission. Look for a near duplicate of this same model...and these may be over several years.
