Horrific Random Grinding Noise Makes Vehicle Inoperable

My local mechanic hasn't been able to figure out what's wrong with my car (brought it in twice now). It's a 2011 or 2012 Ford Escape. The progression of issues started like this: Wasn't going in to gear properly but then seemed to correct itself. Then, the front of the car started creaking every time I'd come to a stop/start driving again. It would do this for awhile until the REAL problem happened. After coming to a stop and then starting to go again the LOUDEST GRIDING NOISE and shaking on front passenger side happened. Could barely drive forward or reverse. Was as if brakes were on when they weren't while the grinding noise occurred. Smelled like burning on front passenger side. Here's the kicker. I get it into a spot, turn it off, and then a couple hours later it's completely fine! drives like nothing happened!
