Gauge cluster turns on and off

I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer ES at 111,251 miles. At random times while driving the gauge cluster will just shut off and all my guavas will drop to 0 and it will show that I have no gas. With a light tap to the top of the dash the gauge cluster flicks back on with no problems, it will also turn back on after a few seconds if it's not touched. I read that it could be a crack in the copper on the motherboard or a loose wire within my connectors. I'm not quite sure what it is. Also at times it will freeze where it is and won't reset until disconnected and reconnected.

There are several possibilities; loose wiring or connector to the gauge panel, circuit board crack or small defect in the solder, loose pin or component in the instrument panel, poor / corroded / loose ground connection.

In order to fix the issue, the gauge panel or cluster must first be removed from the instrument panel as a subassembly.

Note that messing with the instrument cluster yourself is not advisable. This can trip tampering settings which can lead to insurance and resale problems. In my experience any sort of short in any module, cluster included, will just get progressively worse and will eventually leave you stranded. There aren't many independent shops equipped to do the necessary cloning and programming for cluster swaps, but I've had good experiences with instrumentclusterstore.com to get me back on the road without relying on the dealership.
