Fan keeps running after vehicle is turned off

I have a 2007 audi s4 base 4.2 v8 and when I turn the car off sometimes the fan will continue to run. It may run for 20 min or so sometimes causing the battery to die. It isn't overheating or even running hot. Is this a common problem? What can I do to fix it?

There are several possibilities; faulty cooling fan temperature sensor, faulty cooling fan relay, faulty cooling fan wiring or connections.
As the first step - locate the cooling fan relay in the relay/fuse panel - and swap or exchange that relay with another one of the same pin configuration - to see if the pronblem moves. If yes, then replace that relay.

Try these various on-line parts resources; www.autopartsanything.com; www.partsgeek.com; www.rockauto.com - to list only a few.

In fact, they (RockAuto) list the radiator fan temperature sensor from around $5.20 for your vehicle.

Radiator cooling fan temperature sensor = √úRO PARTS part #059919501A - or it's equivalent
