2003 Mercedes Benz C320 Base 6 Cyl 3.2L

What could be the cause of failure to start on cold mornings?

The car starts normally and runs well except for cold weather. It cranks and tries to run but dies and seems to be flooded. When it does start it smokes and I smell gasoline.
It also sometimes idles roughly when stopping at a stop light. It runs fine the rest of the time.

It could be the catalytic converter building up. Getting gunked up and causing too much back pressure. Could be as simple as a few taps with a hammer to free up debris in cat or res. Or, take it out and drive it like you stole it for a little while and try to burn the carbon build up out of there. Hope that helps.
