1999 Cadillac Escalade Base 8 Cyl 5.70L

Engine

What would cause the engine to surge while idling?

I bought this Cadillac with cracked heads. I have replaced the heads and have the engine running and starting perfectly. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Runs well with alot of power when revved up. When idling (ticking over) the engine surges. I had it checked on a computer and it says that there are no faults. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Several possibilities; engine vacuum leak, fuel supply pressure is low, air intake filter is clogged, dirty mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

Thank you Jimm. Where would the MAF sensor be located?

No problem, the mass air flow (MAF) sensor is located near the air intake filter, just downstream of the filter. Look at the air intake hose and the MAF is located right where the intake hose is connected to the engine.

Simply remove the air intake hose connection for access to the MAF and for cleaning purposes. Be sure to use an aerosol MAF / throttle body-specific cleaner.

Thank you for your input. I studied the intake hose today and found the following... #1 Just after the filter is a guage type sensor that I imagine is for the filter. #2 Then moving towards the injection block I have a sensor that just slips into a rubber housing that has 2 simple wires going to it. #3 is closest to the injection block-intake manifold, electronic block like structure that fits between aluminium plates that are the hose connection pieces. Which one is it?
