2012 Volkswagen Routan S 6 Cyl 3.60L

Preventive Maintenance

Electrical Issues w/VW Routan

My car has an odd electrical problem that seems to be worse on warm or hot days. When I start the van, the battery light comes on, even though the battery is less than 6 months old. After you drive for a while, more dash lights come on (airbag, traction control). Then systems start cutting out. Power windows, A/C, radio, center console, dashboard. They will cut out for a few seconds up to a few minutes and then come on again. This can happen repeatedly, one on top of the other. So far, the exterior lights have not had an issue, but that could change.
The dash lights and beeps can be quite frustrating. I'm hoping that someone can give me a couple of possiblities before I take it in.
Thank you,

First step - check the battery connections - especially the ground cable; on both ends - at the battery and at the chassis ground connection. Should be clean and tight with no losseness or corrosion.

Next, check all other ground wires - in particular the ground cable or cables underneath the instrument panel. Should be the same condition; clean and tight with no corrosion.

Finally, double-check the fuse panel and relays for the wiring and connections - in fact, pull (remove) and then replace each fuse and each relay one at a time (with the key off) to insure a solid connection; no looseness.
