srtfhomemech77 11/11/2010Check for the color of the smoke coming out of the exhaust warm & cold. Vapory white smoke when it is cold or warmed up could be head gasket or intake manifold leaks. Check for water in the oil or smudgy looking oil. A little white smoke if just gassy is ok. When warmed up, too much black smoke could be bad or dirty injectors. Diesels will rattle when cold, but not excessively. Also, make sure the glow plugs are working when you turn the key on from a cold start.
