Is it OK to change from regular motor oil to synthetic if I change the oil pan too? I have to change the oil pan any way

I would use what your owners manual reccommends. With a high mileage engine, I don't reccommend changing. That is just my opinion.

If burning a little oil, or even if not, you may want to move to a higher viscosity oil and use platinum plugs for sure to prevent fouling.

Ask the folks at Amsoil.com, for a recommendation on a proper weight, it is one of the best synthetics made and the higher mileage saves on oil changes. I go a year now using their filter and oil.

For 2002, Volkswagen used synthetic oil in the turbocharged engines only.
