2011 Volvo XC90 3.2 6 Cyl 3.20L

Engine

Catalytic Converter ? Help.

My car is a Volvo XC90,2011,3.2, 170,000 miles, everything works very well and the engine performs well, except Check Engine Light is on, I have replaced both cats (brand new, aftermarket part, 5 years guarantee)and two sensors, things get better but CEL is still on every now and then, comes on and disappears automatically, probably once a week. The technician told me, it's related to oil burning of the engine. To try to figure it out, I went to official Volvo car care center, the advisor there told me the real problem is the aftermarket Cats I used, which is defective, no great importance to the engine burning, by the way, the engine consumes 1quart every 3000-3500 miles, which is normal according to Volvo car care center said. Also, Volvo told me, I have to redo it, by using original Volvo parts, which will be a huge cost. I have put a lot of money and time on that, but the ECL is alway there, sometimes comes on, sometimes comes off. So, somebody could help me or tell me somewhere?

First step - have the stored fault codes or check engine light scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA.
Then, post a reply as 'add answer' with the specific code for more assistance.

This aspect is important; there may be a fault code stored in the OBD memory which may not be displayed as a check engine light.

Do not skip this important first step - there are literally hundreds of possible fault codes. Avoid wasting/ throwing money at the problem.

The catalytic converters do not have to come from Volvo; there are good quality aftermarket converters on the market, which are same or better as OEM (original equipment) quality. Avoid that dealership - or any dealership or repair shop which tells you this story, as they are just trying to wring extra money from you.

Try these on-line resources for the replacement parts: www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.partsgeek.com, www.rockauto.com, www.partstrain.com - to list a few.

For example, they (RockAuto) list the replacement catalytic converter from around $300.00 each for your vehicle.

Front = DAVICO MANUFACTURING part #58313 - or it's equivalent
Rear = DAVICO MANUFACTURING part #57313 - or it's equivalent

Does engine burning oil damage the Cat Converter, like I mentioned "1quart every 3000-3500 miles"?

All internal combustion engines 'burn' or use a small amount of oil between oil changes, and the rate of 1 quart every 3000-5000 miles is not considered excessive, nor would this normal amount be harmful to the catalytic converters.
Especially considering the engine has 170k miles of wear - this oil usage rate is not abnormal.

The first step is to retrieve the CEL stored fault code and then diagnose the issue.
