Catalytic converter became red hot and lots of smoke near it even with the engine cool?

Nissan Technical Advisor

Depending on the input given, your catalytic converter is working hard that indicates unburned fuel in the exhaust which is most likely caused by ignition misfire or a compression leak. Did you try to test the catalytic converter with a vacuum gauge, to determine its working condition? Test and replace it if necessary.
