2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring 4 Cyl 2.40L

Carmax PT Cruiser: After 6 months, check engine light stays on all the time

I bought a 2002 PT Cruiser 4-door Sport UTI from Carmax with under 30,000 miles. My son drove it to college and now has about 50,000 miles. No longer needed, I inherited it and over a year ago the Check Engine Light; one day came on while driving and to this day it will never go off. I know the car will be comong up for emission testing in August and would like to know what, where, how and how much it will cost to get this fixed. If anyone knows a reliable mechanic in or around the nearby towns of Addison, who will not rip me off; could you please let me know. I have been quoted from $100.00 to $1800.00 and being disabled I am on a fixed buget and can't afford those in between prices. Plus, it would be sure nice to know of a decent and honest auto repair shops with reputable mechanics.
Would like to hear from anyone out there, THANKS!
I don't know a category to put it under, so I guess ENGINE would be the best.

I'm unsure who/why you were quoted so much $$ and for what?!
However; do the following to find out what codes are stored/and why the CEL light is on:

1. Cycle the ignition key ON - OFF - ON - OFF - ON within 5 seconds .
2. The odometer will show the P-code for the DTC code number.
3. If no DTC's are present, the cluster will display one of two texts: "P1684" and "done" or only "done".

"P1684" is only a status and indicates that the PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50 ignition cycles and does not indicate a problem.
"done" indicates that NO DTCs are present and the procedure is complete.

Refer to the DTC chart (link below) for a detailed explanation of the DTC codes.
