1999 Chevrolet Lumina LTZ 6 Cyl 3.80L

Engine

Car slowly lost power and eventually stopped running. What do I check out?

Lights for 'volts' 'abs' came on. At one point when I had stopped the radio cut out and lights were not as bright. I could here my brakes loudly whenever I hit the pedal and acceleration was poor. Eventually the car whined and wouldn't move. Thoughts say alternator but bot sure. Also had been 5000 since oil change and I'm now at 169000 miles. What are my first few steps here?

If you can jump start you can check out voltage at battery, engine running should be 13.5-14 volts at battery, if not alternator bad.
