Steering & Suspension

What would make a car make a loud humming noise when going at around 60 mph and almost a ticking at slower speeds?

Sounds like it is coming from around the front tires. Have checked the breaks and the hub assembly.
There is no noise if the car is started and isn't in motion.
The ticking noise only seems to happen when the wheel is turned in a direction. If the car is going straight no ticking happens. Though the humming still happens at going straight at higher speeds.
It seemed to start after I had taken the car off the road at a place that I though was a little closer to the ground than it was. Heard a scrape then the noises started.
