2004 Honda Civic Value Package 4 Cyl 1.7L

My car keeps over heating but only when I'm coming to a stop.

I drive 2004 honda civic coup dl. I keep the heat on but it only works when I'm driving at a high consistent speed, like when I'm on the highway. But when I come to a stop the heat turns cold and temp gage goes up. I thought the water pump but wouldn't the heat stop working all together if that was the case. I keep topping it off with antifreeze but it only helps short term. I need help figuring this out in the most cost efficient way. Thanks, Joseph

You most likely have an air pocket inside engine block coolant ports. Try purging cooling system.
