Preventive Maintenance

After adding oil to my car it is emitting clouds of white smoke why is this happening?

I think I may have added a at too much. Will the smoking eventually stop or is it irreparably damaged?
Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to go to a shop which I cannot afford right now.
Can I let the engine run for awhile in the driveway?

Check the engine oil level - with the engine off and cold (before starting up). You can remove some of the engine oil - by taking off the oil pan drain plug, underneath the engine.

Letting the car sit at idle speed with too much oil may result in engine damage.
