1999 Ford Explorer XLT 6 Cyl 4.00L

i removed the trans and found metal shaving in the trans fluid. veh will not engage when letting off the clutch

It's from the bushing and bearings and such getting worn down. A trans with more than 100k deserves to have a few shavings in there. It's a good idea to change fluid and flush screen about every 2 years or 30k miles or so. Transmissions also wear out eventually like engines do. Someday (Like this year, today, now) you will need to get it rebuilt. Ford has great remanufactured transmissions as does http://www.jasperengines.com/

thanks for the info, just was not sure if i should replace the transmission or look for
something less expensive.

Metal shaving indicates that some gears are chipped off and will worsen its condition on prolong use, rebuild is best solution. Engine and transmission is prone to wear and tear due to age and use, so its normal and irrespective of manufacturer's make the parts gets worn, but signs and symptoms of malfunction should be checked soon before worse thing happen to other transmission parts so that huge expenses for repair can be avoided.
