How to Replace a Fuel Tank

Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.

Locate the vehicle's fuel tank.

Inspect the fuel tank for leaks.

Locate the fuel pump fuse.

Remove the fuse and start the engine to relieve the fuel system pressure.

Siphon or drain as much fuel as possible from the fuel tank. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel tank.

Using a floor jack with a 2x4 (to disperse the weight/pressure), support the fuel tank.

Remove any retaining straps or bolts holding the fuel tank to the frame.

Remove all components from the fuel tank.

Install all components on the new fuel tank.

Reverse removal procedures for installation.

Fill fuel tank and check for leaks

Reinstall the fuel pump fuse. Start the vehicle's engine and check for leaking fuel line connections.

Road test vehicle and re-inspect to verify repairs.
