This guide requires the following supplies:
- Thread locking compound
- White out
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.
Make sure the vehicle is parked on a solid leveled surface to ensure that it does not roll or lean when raised.
Use a jack to raise the front of the vehicle.
Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.
Locate the transfer case rear output seal on the back of the case where the driveshaft is installed.
Inspect the rear output seal to see if it is bent, cracked or leaking.
Use white out to put a mark/line on the driveshaft as well as on the yoke to insure correct realignment. Disconnect the driveshaft at the yoke and lower the driveshaft from the transfer case.
Remove the nut and washer from the yoke and pull it from the transfer case.
Using a punch and hammer, carefully tap on the face of the seal to help pivot the seal out of the case.
Clean debris and oil from the bore using a rag and a can of brake cleaner.
Apply a thin layer of sealer on the outside of the new rear output seal.
Using a seal driver and hammer, drive the seal squarely into the bore.
Install the yoke assembly. Apply thread lock to the bolt threads and torque the bolt to the manufacturer's specifications.
Align marks and Install the driveshaft back onto the yoke assembly.
Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and road test.
