Are there still shady auto mechanic shops around? Sure are... Sandy Muffler and Brake tried to pull a fast one over on me. I must have had sucker written on my face. Sandy Muffler and Brake was recommended to me by a friend. I went down there and explained to Frank there was a squeal coming from under the hood of my truck . I told him I thought it was my serpentine belt. Frank had me start up my truck and took a quick look under the hood. Yep, Frank said it was the serpentine belt- it was glazed and it had to be replaced. Initially, he quoted me about $130 and a 30 minute job. Then Frank wrote up the estimate on his computer... $66.00 dollars for 30 MINUTES of labor, $99.00 for a serpentine belt, and "parts" $7.00. All of a sudden, with tax I was up to $180.00! Frank had one of his workers drive my truck around to the back behind the garage... upon taking another look under the hood the tension pulley was shot. Frank pulled another estimate and proudly exclaimed, "The good news is we are not charging you any more for labor." (Really thoughtful of you Frank seeing that I was being charged labor at a rate of $132/HR.) The tension pulley was another $126.00!! The "parts" had also shot up to $14.00. Out the door... total for labor, parts, fees, taxes, etc. was $328. WTF? I went to a nearby parts store to get prices on the serpentine belt and tension pulley- ironically, the same parts store Sandy Muffler and Brake uses. Wouldn't you know if I bought the serpentine belt it would cost me $29.00 and the tension pulley would cost $17.00. Interesting...I may be a woman and I may not know HOW to do automotive work myself, but I sure know when I am being taken advantage of. My day had a happier ending. I took my vehicle to another shop and explained my problem. Yes, the tension pulley definitely needed to be replaced, but the HONEST mechanic at a this OTHER Muffler and Brake shop told me my serpentine belt looked brand new. Not worn and glazed like Frank told me. This OTHER Muffler and Brake shop was able to get the job done at LESS THAN HALF the price Sandy Muffler and Brake was going to charge me. It was done in 30 minutes and I was charged $42.50 for the labor- which is a REASONABLE and HONEST charge for the work I had done. Husbands, Fathers, Boyfriends... If you LOVE the girl/.woman/wife/daughter in your life DO NOT SEND THEM TO SANDY MUFFLER AND BRAKE!!!!
