Repair/Service: Engine Swap, "remanufactured"
Hourly Rate: $60.00
Total Cost: $2350
The engine that B&M installed in my truck has been troublesome from the start. It shot black smoke when I first brought it home, and when they installed a new radiator the shop neglected to install new hoses as well, leading to leaks and major coolant loss. They also reused many parts that should have been replaced including the motor mounts. Per the suggestion of one of the shop's mechanics I installed a brand new Weber 32/36 carburetor to help reduce the smoke and make it run smoother. To my horror, even after investing in the carb and having the shop "tune" it, my "remanufactured" 22R continues to shoot black smoke, indicating bad rings which were supposedly checked by the shop during the engine swap process. Also contributing to my anger is the lack of power I'm achieving even with a tuned performance carb, leading me to believe that the head they put on the engine was warped slightly warped or has low compression or a stuck valve. I am beyond displeased with this engine and the overall lack of enthusiasm I receive when I ask for repair work to be done. Frankly, I would never recommend B&M to any of my friends. Plus the price for the engine swap is RIDICULOUSLY HIGH for a 22R that my Redneck friends swap out in less than 4 hours.

After voicing my concerns about the engine and the issues I was having, Mike and his shop agreed to swap in a new engine to replace the smoking 22R I had originally purchased. Upon tear-down, it was found that the original carburetor that was installed previously to the Weber had very bad jets, and those jets had drown out cylinder #4 during the break-in period, and prevented the rings from properly seating. Mike took full responsibility for not noticing the junk carburetor and thus agreed to cover the full swap and install for free, charging me for the fluids only. I also had him include a high-performance Cam for an extra 100 bucks. The new engine ran like a dream, it was smooth and strong. No smoke, and improved mileage. My only regret was the performance Cam, as my truck was strictly for street driving and it made the engine a little too beefy and loud for my needs. While I was very pleased with the new engine and the upgrades, I still don't agree with the nearly $1000 install price, but if you want it done right, I'd say it's almost worth that amount. So overall, my issue was fixed for a low price, and I was very pleased with the final result.
