Jimm 4/21/2013Several possibilities; faulty / worn cylinder head gasket, leaking radiator hoses, leaking radiator - to cause the loss of fluid and the overheating condition.
Before spending any money for repairs, have these two (2) tests performed to determine the engine sealing and pumping ability; compression test and cylinder leakdown test. If the piston rings are worn, then you may have low compression readings in all four cylinders - for example. There may be the condition of the engine cylinder head gasket is leaking or ruptured - there may not be anything wrong with the piston rings at all - but you must determine the engine sealing integrity with these two tests.
