What's causing the screaching sound on starting cold engine?
The sound goes away in 10-15 seconds, but it's ear piercing. The sound shifts tone when I shift from park. I've had this problem for years, 3 sets of drive belts over the last two years, new water pump, air compression unit, other repairs and it's still there. What gives?

Jimm 8/10/2012Several possibilities; worn / slippng drive belt, worn / faulty belt tensioner, worn idler pulley, misaligned drive belt or misaligned belt driven components.
Bill 8/10/2012Thanks Jimm. The belts have been changed three times in two years. So it must be one of the others. Which of them are most likely to not been examined when the mechanic installed or checked the belts? I'm guessing the idler pulley.
